UTRECHT FARE: Featuring Artist Employees

Written by:
outreachnyc

This month we feature the art of Zachery Hale who hails from Store 4, in the East Village.
My work deals with history, the way we come to terms with ourselves and understand ourselves through a master narrative of history. This master narrative is evoked in my work through literary, cinematic, and documentary sources. Ultimately, it’s fiction, it’s a lie- but it’s the lie we choose to believe.

My favorite Utrecht product is the Gloss Medium- it’s so great and versatile, I’d put it on my cereal if I could.

The Damsels in Distress, 50″x72″, oil and transfer on canvas, 2008- It’s 45 portraits of the character actresses that appeared on “Perry Mason,” the wrongfully accused.

Paint In the Street

Written by:

Painting was in the street at New York City’s 4th Avenue Utrecht store! With a large canvas, an easel, a variety of paint colors, brushes and water; passersby were invited to paint their piece. Young and old, experienced and novice - everyone had a great time making art. The resulting canvas is on view in the store window. painting-031.jpg

Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, once again hosted their annual Draw-a-Thon. The drawing extravaganza ran all night, literally, from 7PM until 7AM. This year’s event drew over 400 attendees . Utrecht donated three gift certificates to our stores, which were included in the early morning raffle. All participants received discount cards, flyers and free erasers from Utrecht. The erasers must have come in handy, don’t you think? The event is free and open to all.

Demonstration at the Art Students League

Written by:

dscn3058.JPG On April 18, students at The Art Students League were fortunate to witness a terrific painting demonstration given by Joe Gyurcsak, Utrecht’s resident artist. Inspired to by the League’s history, Joe opted to focus on a still life in the manner of William Merritt Chase, one of the League’s notable professors. Joe drew his cues from Chase, who was famous for painting dead fish on a plate against a dark background. Freshly purchased from the New Jersey market, Joe immortalized his fish with beauty and grace as students learned the secrets to successful oil painting.

Utrecht FARE

Featuring Artist Employees

Did you know that in New York, Utrecht hires artists to work in our stores? Who knows more about art supplies than artists?  Each month we will feature a member of our staff.

Featured Artist: Andrew Birk, Assistant Manager, Fourth Avenue store

Andrew: “I’m interested in making Photoshop pieces that commandeer paintings and photography that people have done and have been left on line.  I’m reinterpreting old materials rather than making new materials.” My current favorite supply at Utrecht is: white tempera paint.
