In addition to Utrecht’s other 60th Anniversary Competitions, the company recently hosted a competition for employees. Two employees in our NYC stores received awards, quite a feat given all of the artist employees in over 30 Utrecht stores.
Third Place in Representational catagory went to Sam Goodsell for ”Subway Rider”, pastel.

Honorable Mention in Non-representational catagory went to Lois Cremmins for “Silver Hair”, paper, glue and marker .

This month we feature the art of Yori Ramsey, who works at Utrecht’s Chelsea store.
Yori is working in the age old method of fresco, painting with pure pigment directly on wet plaster. Last June, Yori showed her fresco painting in an installation at the New York Artists Century Gallery in Chelsea.
Question: What is your current favorite Utrecht art supply?
Yori’s Answer: Recently I like Prismacolor gray pencils to make monochrome drawings.

Environmentalists today are urging us to shop locally…
Did you know that Utrecht Art Supplies mills its paints and gesso in a factory located here in Brooklyn? Did you know that in 1949, Norman and Harold Gulamerian from New Utrecht began importing fine linen from Europe and started the company as Utrecht Linens?
Be green - Stop over at the Union Square Farmers Market and walk two blocks south to Utrecht Art Supplies to purchase your paint from a store that can boast 75 years of manufacturing locally.

Employees at the 4th Avenue store celebrate Utrecht, the “native New Yorker” during 2009’s Summer Streets.

The Pastel Society of America, America’s oldest and most prestigious pastel society, once again invited Utrecht Art Supplies to participate in their Annual Art Materials Fair on Saturday, September 12. The Fair coincided with PSA’s 2009 Annual Exhibition, all located at their magnificent headquarters at 15 Grammercy Park South. Since the PSA boasts membership nationwide, many of the attendees were visiting New York City from out of town. They were pleased to find out that Utrecht had a store located in a city near their homes.
Utrecht’s table featured a large sampling of pastel sticks, kits, pads and fine papers for attendees to try out. What attracted the most attention was the sampling of Utrecht products that allow the pastel artist to prepare a surface from scratch to his or her own liking, using a combination of acrylic paints, gesso and pumice on board or stiff paper. Sam Goodsall, a Utrecht employee and accomplished pastellist, was on hand demonstrating a portrait from life as well as to answer questions about products and techniques.
